our worship music
My earliest recollection of music is singing the hymns from the hymnal in church. I developed a love for them from the start. I enjoyed playing sight-singing games with them, singing the alto line at one service, the soprano at another, even the bass and tenor lines an octave higher. When I had mastered all the singing parts, I moved on to the piano arrangement. I noticed that my church pianist did not play note for note from the hymnbook, but she added many special touches. Wanting to achieve the same mastery, I would sit at the piano until I also could add octave bass lines and arpeggiated melodic lines. As I grew in my relationship with the Lord, the words of the hymns began to minister to me in a deeper way. I enjoyed singing the testimonials of Christians that had gone on before me. Their tenacity and commitment inspired me to fall deeply and passionately in love with the Lord. From the beginning of my piano lessons at the age of 6, I had also developed a love for classical music. As I matured, the music matured with me, and in the same way the hymns spoke to me, the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Mendelssohn moved me.
Not all of the great classical composers were Christians, but I have always believed that "God uses all things for His good." Mendelssohn's letters however, reveal a profound faith in God. Echoing the words of a psalm, he wrote, "Pray to God that He may create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us."
Our prayer for you, the listener or the performer, is that our music selections will create beautiful images in your mind and heart of the amazing love of our Savior.
